Colorado Chapter of Prevent Child Abuse America

Illuminate Colorado is home to the Colorado Chapter of Prevent Child Abuse America, the nation’s oldest and largest organization committed to preventing child abuse and neglect before it happens.

As a state chapter, we are a part of a national network of organizations and community members working to promote programs and resources informed by science that enable kids, families, and entire communities to thrive—today, tomorrow, and for generations to come.

Prevent Child Abuse Colorado

Our History Together

In 2017, Prevent Child Abuse Colorado was among the four independent nonprofit organizations in Colorado that consolidated to leverage resources and increase capacity to more effectively prevent child maltreatment in Colorado. Since then, we’ve grown exponentially in service of our mission to strengthen families, organizations and communities to prevent child maltreatment.

As the Colorado Chapter of Prevent Child Abuse America, Illuminate Colorado leads the Pinwheels for Prevention Campaign in Colorado. Beginning in Colorado in 2009, the Campaign has grown exponentially over the years with hundreds of local organizations and individuals distributing more than 50,000 pinwheels each year.

As the Colorado Chapter of Prevent Child Abuse America, Illuminate Colorado also:

  • Contributes invaluably to comprehensive prevention efforts, providing state-level expertise and resources and ultimately amplifying prevention work widely in Colorado
  • Works in tandem with a wide array of community partners to deliver valuable day-to-day prevention work, and
  • Formulates innovative strategies to address issues such as child sexual abuseraising awareness for the prevention of child abuse and neglect, and advocating with state and local governments to ensure that there is funding available for programs designed to benefit children and families.

#PreventionInPartnership

We all have a role in ensuring children have positive experiences, and families have the resources they need, when they need them. #PreventionInPartnership is all about maximizing our efforts, so join us as we recognize Child Abuse Prevention Month!

Colorado Partnership for Thriving Families

Colorado is one of four states chosen by the U.S. Children’s Bureau, Casey Family Programs, the Annie E. Casey Foundation and Prevent Child Abuse America® to participate in a national effort to prove it is possible to fundamentally rethink child welfare by creating the conditions for strong, thriving families where children are free from harm.

Pinwheels for Prevention

April is child abuse prevention month. Every year, for more than ten years now, you may have seen gardens of pinwheels planted in the community, at school, day care or a local hospital or nonprofit organization, and wondered, why? It’s because planting pinwheels represents the bright childhoods we all want for children.

This April, the hope is you will do more than see pinwheels in your community.  There are many ways to get involved and learn more, during child abuse prevention month and all year long.
